Washer Inlet hoses and screens: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The two fill hoses connect your hot and cold faucets to the back of the washer. Small mesh screens at the washer's inlets stop grit and mineral flakes from reaching the valve. Bosch's AquaStop hose has a shut-off valve right at the faucet end.

How it works

House water pressure pushes water through the hoses whenever the inlet valve opens. The screens catch debris on the way, and mineral build-up slowly plugs them. On an AquaStop hose, the valve at the faucet closes when the machine's leak protection trips.

Signs it is failing

Fill-time and water-supply codes usually come from a closed faucet, a kinked hose or a plugged screen before any electrical part. A reversed-hose code means hot and cold are on the wrong faucets.

Can you replace it yourself?

Turn off both faucets, unplug the washer and unscrew the hoses, then clean the screens or replace them if they're crusted. Red goes to hot and blue goes to cold. If water barely trickles through a hose on its own, replace that hose.

Always unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Get a length that reaches without kinking behind the machine. Whirlpool warns that add-on anti-flood devices can cut water pressure, so connect the hoses straight to the faucets.
