Kenmore Washer F5E2 Error Code
Lid won't lock on Kenmore washers.
KenmoreAll Kenmore washer codes
The VMW top-loader tried to lock the lid and couldn't. Something blocking the lock strike, like a sock, a coin or detergent buildup, is the first thing to look for. After that it's the lid lock/switch assembly.
Compatible models
110-series Kenmore VMW top-loaders. Models without a digital display flash the lid lock light instead, and the code is read in diagnostic mode.
Also shown as
F5 E1 on the same family means the lid switch reads the lid as open when you press Start, and F5 E3 means the lid won't unlock. Oasis top-loaders show dL (or F80, F82, F84, F85) for a lid lock failure.
Difficulty
Start with the safe checks below; a worn part may need replacing.

How to fix Kenmore F5E2
Clear the strike area
Unplug the washer. Look at the latch tab on the lid and the slot it drops into, and remove anything stuck there. Wipe off detergent crust with a damp cloth.
Close the lid firmly
Make sure nothing is hanging over the tub rim that stops the lid from sitting flat, then close it fully and restart.
Reset the washer
Unplug it for a couple of minutes, plug it in and try again.
When to call a technician
If the strike is clean and the lid still won't lock, the lid lock/switch assembly is usually replaced. Never tape, wedge or wire around the lock to make the washer run.
