GE Washer E38 Error Code
Dispenser system error. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The control flagged a fault in the detergent dispenser system. Service listings describe E38 as a general dispenser error and E39 as a dispenser that won't move. Caked detergent, a damaged linkage or a failed dispenser motor can be behind it.
Front-load. E39 points to the dispenser not moving. Some older GE Profile front-loaders show E9 for a dispenser problem.
How to fix GE E38
Clean the dispenser drawer
Pull out the dispenser drawer, rinse away caked detergent and softener in warm water, and wipe out the drawer cavity. Make sure the drawer slides fully back into place.
Reset and retest
Unplug the washer for a few minutes, plug it back in, and run a short cycle to see whether the code returns.
When to call a technician
If the code comes back, the dispenser drive or linkage inside the cabinet needs to be inspected and repaired by a technician.

Frequently asked questions
What does E38 mean on a GE washer?
The control flagged a fault in the detergent dispenser system. Service listings describe E38 as a general dispenser error and E39 as a dispenser that won't move. Caked detergent, a damaged linkage or a failed dispenser motor can be behind it.
Can I fix GE E38 myself?
Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but E38 usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.
What if E38 keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when E38 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
