GE Washer Po Error Code

Slow drain (top-load). Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

Po
Easy DIY fix

The washer took longer than expected to pump out water, which often means a partial clog. The machine is warning you before the problem gets worse.

Top-load, 2015-and-newer models. Shown as scrolling 'Po' on models with a display; models without one flash the Rinse light instead.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE Po

  1. Allow for normal pauses

A short stop of up to about 3 minutes between stages is normal on many GE washers. Give it that long before deciding it is really stuck.

  2. Straighten the drain hose

Unplug the washer and check the drain hose behind it for kinks or flattening. The hose should run in a smooth curve to the standpipe or sink.

  3. Test the standpipe

Remove the hose from the standpipe and pour in about a quart of water. If the water backs up or drains slowly, the clog is in the house plumbing.

When to call a technician

If the hose and house drain are clear but Po keeps appearing, or the tub stays full of water, schedule service to check the drain pump.

Frequently asked questions

What does Po mean on a GE washer?

The washer took longer than expected to pump out water, which often means a partial clog. The machine is warning you before the problem gets worse.

Can I fix GE Po myself?

Usually, yes. Most Po problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: allow for normal pauses.

What if Po keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when Po appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
