GE Washer E31 Error Code
Draining took too long. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The washer didn't finish pumping out the water within the time it allows, meaning it is draining too slowly. A partial clog in the pump filter, drain hose or household drain is the usual cause.
Front-load fault code. Closely related to E30 (no drain).
How to fix GE E31
Look for kinks and clogs in the hose
Unplug the washer and inspect the full length of the drain hose. Straighten any sharp bends and flush the hose with water if it feels blocked.
Clean the pump filter
Unplug the washer and set out towels and a pan. Open the lower front access door, slowly unscrew the filter, clear out lint and small objects, and screw it back in snugly so it does not leak. If a hot cycle just ran, wait for the water to cool before opening the filter.
Check the household drain
Pour a quart of water into the standpipe or laundry sink drain. If it drains slowly, clear the house drain or call a plumber.
When to call a technician
If draining stays slow after the filter, hose, and house drain are clear, a technician should check the drain pump.

Frequently asked questions
What does E31 mean on a GE washer?
The washer didn't finish pumping out the water within the time it allows, meaning it is draining too slowly. A partial clog in the pump filter, drain hose or household drain is the usual cause.
Can I fix GE E31 myself?
Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear E31, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.
What if E31 keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when E31 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
