GE Washer E23 Error Code

Washer overfilled. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

E23
May need a pro

The control sensed more water in the tub than it should hold. Either the water inlet valve is not closing fully, or the water level sensor is giving a false reading.

Front-load fault code. On some older GE Profile front-loaders the same number is listed as a drive motor fault instead.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE E23

  1. Cut power and water

Turn off both faucets right away. Unplug the washer, unless water has reached the outlet or cord; in that case switch off its breaker instead. Then wipe up any water on the floor.

  2. Watch for creeping water

With the washer still unplugged, briefly turn the faucets back on and watch the drum for a few minutes, ready to shut them off. If water keeps trickling in with no power, the inlet valve is stuck open; leave the faucets off until it is replaced.

  3. Note whether the tub is empty

If the code appears when the drum is empty or barely wet, the water level sensor or its hose is the more likely cause. Write this down for the technician or parts search.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the valve leaks with power off or the code appears with an empty tub, since replacing the valve or level sensor means opening the cabinet.

Frequently asked questions

What does E23 mean on a GE washer?

The control sensed more water in the tub than it should hold. Either the water inlet valve is not closing fully, or the water level sensor is giving a false reading.

Can I fix GE E23 myself?

Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but E23 usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.

What if E23 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when E23 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
