Washer Detergent dispenser: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The dispenser holds detergent, softener and bleach and releases each one at the right point in the cycle. On front-loaders it's usually a pull-out drawer with a compartment for each product. Bosch i-DOS washers add detergent reservoirs and a dosing pump that measures the detergent for you.

How it works

The inlet valve sends water into one compartment at a time, and that water flushes the product down into the tub. Some machines use a small motor or linkage to switch the flow between compartments. On auto-dose models, the pump draws detergent from the reservoir.

Signs it is failing

Dispenser and auto-dose blockage codes point here, though weak water pressure at the inlet can also leave product behind.

Can you replace it yourself?

Press the release tab, pull the drawer out, soak it in warm water and scrub the cavity it sits in with an old toothbrush. Replacing a dispenser motor or linkage means unplugging the washer and taking the top off, which is a step up from cleaning.

Always unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Some listings are the whole drawer assembly and others are one piece, like the handle frame, so read what's included. The plastic tabs are small and snap if you force them.
