GE Washer Sud Error Code

Too many suds. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

Sud
Easy DIY fix

The washer sensed too much foam, usually from using non-HE detergent or too much of it. It tries to rinse and pump the suds away with added steps and may stop partway if the foam won't clear. A clogged pump or drain line can trigger the same message.

Shown on GE models that display text messages; not every model has it, so check your owner's manual.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE Sud

  1. Let the washer clear the suds

Give the washer time to run its extra rinses. If it pauses, run a Rinse and Spin cycle with no detergent added.

  2. Switch to HE detergent and measure

Use only detergent marked HE and fill to the line on the cap, or less for small or lightly soiled loads. Pods and very concentrated detergents need far less than older-style products.

  3. Clear the drain path

Unplug the washer and check that the drain hose is not kinked. On front-loaders, clean the pump filter behind the lower front access door to remove lint and debris.

When to call a technician

If Sud appears even with a correct amount of HE detergent and a clear drain, have the drain pump checked.

Frequently asked questions

What does Sud mean on a GE washer?

The washer sensed too much foam, usually from using non-HE detergent or too much of it. It tries to rinse and pump the suds away with added steps and may stop partway if the foam won't clear. A clogged pump or drain line can trigger the same message.

Can I fix GE Sud myself?

Usually, yes. Most Sud problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: let the washer clear the suds.

What if Sud keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when Sud appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
