Kenmore Dryer E4A / E5B Error Code
No heat or drying takes too long (417 dryers) on Kenmore dryers.
KenmoreAll Kenmore dryer codes
E5B means the dryer isn't producing heat, and E4A means a load has run longer than the cycle allows, usually for the same reason. On electric models a tripped breaker is a common cause; on gas models, a closed supply valve. Otherwise a part in the heating system has failed.

How to fix Kenmore E4A / E5B
Electric: check both breakers
At the panel, turn the dryer's double breaker fully off and back on. Whirlpool explains that one circuit runs the motor and the other the heater, so a dryer with one side tripped can tumble without heating.
Gas: check the supply valve
Sears PartsDirect's first check for E5B on gas models is that the shutoff valve behind the dryer is fully open; Whirlpool notes the handle sits parallel to the pipe when it is. Don't loosen any fittings. If you smell gas, leave the house right away and call the gas company once you are outside.
Rule out a blocked vent
Restricted airflow drags out drying times, and on 417 models it's also the main reason the high-limit thermostat trips. Clean the screen and check that the duct behind the dryer isn't crushed.
When to call a technician
With power and gas confirmed, the heating element (electric) or the burner parts (gas) need testing. Gas burner work is always a technician job.
