Dryer Gas burner parts (igniter, flame sensor, valve coils): What It Does and Signs It's Failing

Gas dryers heat with a burner near the bottom of the cabinet. The igniter glows red-hot to light the gas, the flame sensor watches the burner, and the gas valve coils open the valve. The gas supply connector is the line from your house shutoff to the dryer.

How it works

When the dryer calls for heat, the igniter heats up and the flame sensor checks that it's hot enough. Then the coils open the gas valve, the gas lights and the burner heats the air. If any of those steps fails, the valve stays shut and there's no heat.

Signs it is failing

Gas-supply and ignition codes, and many no-heat complaints on gas dryers, point to this group of parts or to a closed supply valve. LG lists a closed valve or a kinked gas line as the usual cause on new installs.

Can you replace it yourself?

If you smell gas, leave the house now and call the gas company from outside; don't flip switches or unplug anything. Otherwise, the homeowner check is making sure the shutoff valve is fully open and the gas line isn't kinked. Igniter, sensor and valve work is a technician job on any gas appliance.

Always unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

The technician will match parts to your model. A dryer is set up for either natural gas or LP, and GE says switching it over takes a conversion kit fitted by a qualified gas technician.
