Kenmore Dryer F31 / F4E4 Error Code
Low or missing voltage on one leg (electric dryers) on Kenmore dryers.
KenmoreAll Kenmore dryer codes
An electric dryer runs on 240 volts split over two legs, and the second leg (L2) is missing or reading under about 30 volts. Without it the heater can't run. A tripped half of the double breaker, a blown fuse, a loose wire at the cord's terminal block or a damaged cord are the likely culprits.
Compatible models

How to fix Kenmore F31 / F4E4
Reset the breaker
At the panel, find the dryer's double breaker. Switch it fully off, then back on, even if it doesn't look tripped, because one half can trip on its own. In a fuse box, check both fuses.
Check the cord connection
Unplug the dryer, then remove the small cover on the back where the cord enters. Look for loose screws, burnt or melted terminals and discolored wires. If your installation manual shows how the cord should be wired, compare it.
Replace a damaged cord
A cord with scorched ends or cracked insulation should be replaced with one rated for your dryer, wired as the installation manual shows.
When to call a technician
If the breaker and cord check out, have an electrician test the 240 V supply at the outlet. Burn marks at the terminal block also deserve a professional look before the dryer runs again.
