Dryer Power cord and terminal block: What It Does and Signs It's Failing
Electric dryers plug into a 240 V outlet with a three- or four-wire cord that connects to a terminal block on the back of the dryer. They run on two circuits from your panel, usually a double breaker. Gas dryers plug into an ordinary 120 V grounded outlet.

How it works
The heater needs the second circuit, so if one breaker trips the dryer can tumble without heat, and some controls show a low-voltage code. A cord wired wrong at the terminal block can set a voltage code too. Loose connections at the block can arc and melt it.
Signs it is failing
- Drum turns but no heat, with one breaker tripped
- Low-voltage or wrong-voltage code
- Burn marks or melted plastic at the terminal block
- Cord damaged or frayed
- Dryer loses power mid-cycle
Power-failure, low-voltage, wrong-voltage and no-heater-current codes lead here. Often resetting both breakers fixes it, but scorched wiring needs a pro.
Can you replace it yourself?
Turn both dryer breakers off for a minute, then back on, and make sure the plug is pushed all the way into the outlet. Whirlpool says the terminal screws should be tight, and to unplug the dryer before you look at them. A melted block, a burnt cord or testing the outlet's voltage is a job for a technician or electrician.
Buying the right part
The cord has to match your outlet (three- or four-prong) and come with a strain relief clamp. Use the cord kit your installation guide calls for.
