Hotpoint (UK) Washer F18 Error Code

Internal data error. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

F18
May need a pro

The machine's control electronics have hit an internal data error. Some or all of the display or functions may stop working. As with F01, a full power reset can sometimes clear it.

Applies to UK/European Hotpoint machines only, not GE-made Hotpoint washers sold in the US. Indesit's UK service site lists the same code with the same meaning.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Hotpoint (UK) F18

  1. Do a full power reset

Switch the machine off and unplug it. If there is water near the outlet or cord, switch off the circuit breaker instead of touching the plug. Hotpoint advises leaving it unplugged for at least 2 minutes, then plugging it back in, waiting about 30 seconds and starting a program again.

  2. Note the details for the technician

Write down the code, the program you were running and the model and serial numbers from the label inside the door. This helps the technician bring the right parts.

When to call a technician

If the error comes back after a reset, book a technician to check the electronics.

Frequently asked questions

What does F18 mean on a Hotpoint (UK) washer?

The machine's control electronics have hit an internal data error. Some or all of the display or functions may stop working. As with F01, a full power reset can sometimes clear it.

Can I fix Hotpoint (UK) F18 myself?

Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but F18 usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.

What if F18 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when F18 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
