Hotpoint (UK) Washer F05 Error Code

Not draining: blocked pump filter or waste hose. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

F05
Easy DIY fix

The machine cannot pump the water away, so the door may stay locked or the drum may still hold water at the end of a cycle. Hotpoint's first suspects are a blocked pump filter, a kinked or blocked waste hose, or a blockage in the under-sink plumbing. If all of those are clear, the drain pump has likely failed.

Applies to UK/European Hotpoint machines only, not GE-made Hotpoint washers sold in the US. Indesit's UK service site lists the same code with the same meaning. Not every model has a user-accessible pump filter, so check your handbook.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Hotpoint (UK) F05

  1. Check the waste hose and sink trap

Switch the machine off and unplug it. If there is water near the outlet or cord, switch off the circuit breaker instead of touching the plug. Pull the machine out gently and make sure the waste hose is not kinked or squashed. If it connects under a sink, check that the spigot and trap are not clogged with lint or food waste.

  2. Drain the leftover water

With the machine still unplugged, open the small panel at the bottom front (if your model has one). Lay down towels and use a shallow tray, because the water can be several quarts (liters) and may be hot. Let it cool first, then drain it slowly through the emergency drain tube or by easing the filter out a little at a time.

  3. Clean the pump filter

Unscrew the filter fully, remove lint, coins, bobby pins and other debris, and rinse it under the faucet. Check that nothing is stuck in the opening, then screw the filter firmly back in and close the panel.

  4. Test with a rinse and spin

Plug the machine back in and run a short Rinse and Spin program. Watch the filter area for drips and see whether the code returns.

When to call a technician

If the filter, hose and sink trap are all clear and the machine still will not drain, the drain pump probably needs replacing. Book a technician.

Frequently asked questions

What does F05 mean on a Hotpoint (UK) washer?

The machine cannot pump the water away, so the door may stay locked or the drum may still hold water at the end of a cycle. Hotpoint's first suspects are a blocked pump filter, a kinked or blocked waste hose, or a blockage in the under-sink plumbing. If all of those are clear, the drain pump has likely failed.

Can I fix Hotpoint (UK) F05 myself?

Usually, yes. Most F05 problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: check the waste hose and sink trap.

What if F05 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when F05 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
