Whirlpool Dryer L2 / F4E4 Error Code
Low or missing supply voltage (electric dryers). Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
An electric dryer needs 240 volts, delivered through two legs of power. These codes mean the control is not seeing enough voltage on the second leg, so the drum may turn but the heater will not come on. Common causes are one tripped breaker or blown fuse, or a power cord that was not wired correctly at installation.
Whirlpool's code list shows L2 and says it comes up at initial installation. Other models show F4E4 (F4 E4); older Cabrio models show F-31 for low L2 voltage. Maytag Centennial dryers also show F4 E4 for a supply voltage error. The 240-volt checks here are for electric dryers.
How to fix Whirlpool L2 / F4E4
Check both breakers or fuses
An electric dryer is on a double breaker or two fuses. Reset a tripped breaker by switching it fully off and then on, or replace a blown fuse. A breaker can trip on one side only and still look normal, so cycle it even if it looks on.
Reset the dryer
With the breaker(s) off for 1 minute, the control also resets. Switch them back on, start a heated Timed Dry cycle, and watch for about 1 minute to see if the code returns. Touch any key to clear the display.
Confirm the power cord installation
If the dryer was just installed or moved, make sure the cord was connected as the installation instructions describe. Only check the terminal block cover with the dryer unplugged; if you see loose, burned, or melted wiring, stop and have it repaired.
When to call a technician
If the breakers are fine and the code persists, have a licensed electrician check that the outlet supplies 240 volts on a dedicated 30-amp circuit. Burned wires at the cord or outlet need professional repair before the dryer is used again.

Frequently asked questions
What does L2 / F4E4 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
An electric dryer needs 240 volts, delivered through two legs of power. These codes mean the control is not seeing enough voltage on the second leg, so the drum may turn but the heater will not come on. Common causes are one tripped breaker or blown fuse, or a power cord that was not wired correctly at installation.
Can I fix Whirlpool L2 / F4E4 myself?
Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear L2 / F4E4, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.
What if L2 / F4E4 keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when L2 / F4E4 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
