Whirlpool Dryer F2E1 Error Code

Stuck button on the control panel. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

F2E1
Moderate DIY

The control thinks one of the buttons is being held down permanently. A key can stick after being pressed hard, or from spills or grime around the panel. A worn keypad can also cause it.

Older Cabrio, Duet, and Maytag Bravos dryers show F-02 (F:02 on Duet) for a keypad fault. Maytag Centennial dryers also use F2 E1. Whirlpool lists the related F2E2 code as a keypad or control fault and handles it with the same reset.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool F2E1

  1. Press each button

Firmly press and release every button on the control panel one at a time. Feel for one that does not spring back or click like the others.

  2. Clean around the keys

Unplug the dryer, then wipe the panel with a cloth that is only slightly damp, working around the edges of the buttons. Do not spray cleaner onto the panel, and dry it fully before restoring power.

  3. Reset the dryer

Switch off the breaker(s) for 1 minute, turn them back on, start a Timed Dry cycle, and watch for about 1 minute to see if the code returns.

When to call a technician

If a key stays stuck or the code keeps coming back, the user interface (keypad) assembly usually needs to be replaced by a technician.

Frequently asked questions

What does F2E1 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?

The control thinks one of the buttons is being held down permanently. A key can stick after being pressed hard, or from spills or grime around the panel. A worn keypad can also cause it.

Can I fix Whirlpool F2E1 myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear F2E1, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.

What if F2E1 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when F2E1 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
