Whirlpool Dryer F3E3 Error Code

Inlet temperature sensor (thermistor) fault. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

May need a pro

The inlet thermistor measures the temperature of the heated air going into the drum. F3E3 means the control is reading a value that is out of range, which usually points to a failed sensor or a wiring problem between the sensor and the control board.

Older Duet dryers show F:24 or F:25 for an inlet thermistor failure; on those models the inlet thermistor is built into the high-limit thermostat, so the two are replaced together. Maytag Centennial dryers also use F3 E3.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool F3E3

  1. Reset the dryer

Switch off the dryer's breaker(s), or unplug it, for 1 minute. Restore power, start a Timed Dry cycle, and watch for about 1 minute to see if the code comes back.

  2. Note your model number

If the code returns, find your model number on the label inside the door frame and note whether the dryer is gas or electric. The sensor part differs by model.

When to call a technician

A returning F3E3 needs a technician to test the inlet thermistor and its wiring inside the cabinet. Never bypass a thermostat or sensor to get heat back. On a gas dryer, if you smell gas, leave the house right away and call the gas company from outside.

Frequently asked questions

What does F3E3 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?

The inlet thermistor measures the temperature of the heated air going into the drum. F3E3 means the control is reading a value that is out of range, which usually points to a failed sensor or a wiring problem between the sensor and the control board.

Can I fix Whirlpool F3E3 myself?

Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but F3E3 usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.

What if F3E3 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when F3E3 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
