Safety first: unplug the air conditioner (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Carrier E4 / E5 / F1 / F2 / F3

  1. Reset the power

Turn the system off at the breaker for several minutes and back on. A code caused by a glitch should stay gone.

  2. Note which code it is

Write down whether it starts with E (indoor) or F (outdoor). That tells the technician which unit to open.

When to call a technician

Sensors are wired to the boards inside the indoor and outdoor units, so a code that comes back after a reset is a service call.
