Carrier Air Conditioner 71 / 72 / 81 / 82 Error Code
Compressor thermal cutout or lockout on Carrier air conditioners.
CarrierAll Carrier air conditioner codes
The board saw the compressor start and then lose power partway through a run. Carrier blames the compressor's internal overload tripping, or on units with a hard-start kit, a start relay or capacitor staying in the circuit too long. Codes 71 and 72 mark a single cutout on low or high stage; 81 and 82 mean it happened three cycles running and that stage is locked out.
Compatible models
Two-stage compressors in Infinity 24ANB7 air conditioners and 25HNB6/25HNB9 heat pumps.
Also shown as
The lockout codes clear after 4 hours or a 24-volt power cycle. An overheated compressor can take a long while to cool down and reset its own overload.
Difficulty
Try the basic checks, but the usual fix is a technician's job.

How to fix Carrier 71 / 72 / 81 / 82
Check outdoor airflow
Turn off the power, then clear anything crowding the outdoor coil. A smothered coil makes the compressor run hot.
Let it rest before restarting
Leave the system off for an hour or more. Restarting a hot compressor over and over adds wear without fixing the cause.
When to call a technician
Repeated thermal codes call for a technician to check the capacitor, start components, voltage and refrigerant charge. Don't keep resetting the lockout.
