Dryer Exhaust vent duct: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The exhaust duct carries hot, damp air and fine lint from the back of the dryer to the outside of the house. It includes the short transition duct behind the dryer and the run through the wall or roof. Its length, its number of turns and how clean it is decide how well the dryer can breathe.

How it works

The blower pushes air down the duct and out the hood. Every elbow and every foot of length adds resistance, and lint settles where the air slows, especially in bends and creases. Once enough builds up, drying times climb and the dryer runs hot enough to trip its safety parts.

Restricted-airflow and long-dry codes nearly always come down to the duct. A blocked vent is also the most common reason a thermal fuse blows, and a blown fuse leaves the dryer with no heat.

Can you replace it yourself?

Unplug the dryer (and turn off the gas valve on a gas model) before you pull it out. Disconnect the transition duct, clean it and the wall run with a vent brush, and replace any crushed sections. Samsung says to clean the duct once or twice a year; for a long run or a roof vent, hire a vent cleaner.

Always unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Use 4 in (10 cm) rigid metal duct where you can, or semi-rigid metal if you can't, and never plastic. Stay inside the length limits in your installation guide; GE, for example, takes 10 ft (3 m) off the maximum for every added 90° elbow.
