Dryer Lint filter: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The lint filter is the mesh screen that slides into a slot near the door opening or on top of the dryer. All the air leaving the drum passes through it on the way to the blower and vent. Some LG dryers can tell when the filter isn't in place and won't run without it.

How it works

Fine mesh catches fibers shed by the clothes before they get into the blower and duct. As lint builds up, airflow drops and loads take longer. Fabric softener build-up can choke the mesh too, even when it looks clean.

Signs it is failing

Airflow, check-vent and long-dry codes start with this screen. On dryers that sense the filter, a missing-filter code usually means it isn't pushed all the way in.

Can you replace it yourself?

Clean the screen before every load. Every so often, scrub it with hot soapy water and a soft brush, let it dry, and vacuum out the slot, because lint packed in there is a fire hazard. Replace the screen if the mesh is torn, since lint will go straight into the blower.

Always unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Screens come in a lot of shapes and sizes, and some need a matching housing or guide, so order by the full model number.
