GE Dryer 009 Error Code

Drive motor problem. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

009
May need a pro

On GE dryers with three-digit codes, 009 points to the drive motor system. The control watches a switch on the motor to confirm it starts and stops, and if it doesn't see the expected signal over several cycles it logs 009. A faulty motor switch, damaged wiring, a failed motor, or a control board fault can cause it.

Applies to GE models with three-digit codes (such as the GFD series). On CleanSpeak-style models, F09 means long dry times instead.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE 009

  1. Check the load

Unplug the dryer and remove some clothes if the drum is packed. Turn the drum by hand to check that nothing is jammed against it.

  2. Run a short test

Restore power and run a short timed cycle. Listen for whether the drum turns and whether the motor sounds normal.

  3. Stop if the motor won't shut off

If the drum keeps turning after the cycle should have ended, unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker and leave it off until it is repaired.

When to call a technician

If 009 returns, the motor, its switch, or the control board needs testing by a technician. Stop using the dryer if you smell burning or hear grinding.

Frequently asked questions

What does 009 mean on a GE dryer?

A faulty motor switch, damaged wiring, a failed motor, or a control board fault can cause it.

Can I fix GE 009 myself?

Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but 009 usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.

What if 009 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when 009 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
