GE Dryer 001 / 002 / 003 / 004 Error Code
Temperature sensor (thermistor) fault. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
GE dryers use thermistors (temperature sensors) to read air temperature and control the heat. These codes mean the control is getting a resistance reading from a thermistor circuit that is far outside the normal range, which usually points to a failed sensor or a loose or damaged wire. All sources agree that 001 and 003 involve the inlet thermistor, which sits in the inlet air duct at the back of the dryer; what 002 and 004 point to is less certain (see below).
Shown on GE models with three-digit codes (such as the GFD series); CleanSpeak-style models show F01/F03 (inlet thermistor) and F02/F04. Sources disagree on 002 and 004: Sears PartsDirect lists them (and F02/F04) as an outlet thermistor fault, with that sensor on the blower housing, while an AppliancePartsPros article describes them as abnormal inlet temperature readings. Because of this conflict, check your model's technical sheet, usually found inside the cabinet, or let a technician confirm which sensor is at fault.
How to fix GE 001 / 002 / 003 / 004
Reset the dryer
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker for 3 minutes. Restore power, start a heated cycle, and watch whether the code returns.
Clean the lint filter and vent
With the dryer unplugged, clean the lint filter and make sure the duct isn't crushed or clogged. This won't fix a failed sensor, but heavy lint near hot parts is a fire risk.
Write down the exact code
Note the code and your model number (on a label around the door opening). The inlet and outlet sensors are different parts, so this helps the technician bring the right one.
When to call a technician
If the code returns, a technician needs to test the thermistors and wiring inside the cabinet and replace the bad part. Never bypass a sensor or thermostat to get heat back. On a gas dryer, if you smell gas, leave the house at once and call the gas company from outside.
Parts that commonly cause 001 / 002 / 003 / 004
- Inlet thermistor
- Outlet thermistor
- Wire harness
Order parts by your exact model number so they fit.

Frequently asked questions
What does 001 / 002 / 003 / 004 mean on a GE dryer?
GE dryers use thermistors (temperature sensors) to read air temperature and control the heat. These codes mean the control is getting a resistance reading from a thermistor circuit that is far outside the normal range, which usually points to a failed sensor or a loose or damaged wire. All sources agree that 001 and 003 involve the inlet thermistor, which sits in the inlet air duct at the back of the dryer; what 002 and 004 point to is less certain (see below).
Can I fix GE 001 / 002 / 003 / 004 myself?
Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but 001 / 002 / 003 / 004 usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.
What if 001 / 002 / 003 / 004 keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when 001 / 002 / 003 / 004 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
