Bosch Washer E16 / F16 Error Code

Door is open or not locked. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

E16 / F16
Easy DIY fix

The washer cannot confirm that the door is closed and locked, so it will not start. Usually the door was not pushed fully shut, or a piece of laundry is caught between the door and the rubber seal. An overfilled drum can also stop the door from closing properly.

Bosch's US code list groups E16, F16, E34 and F34 as door-not-locked codes, and Bosch UK uses E16 for the same problem. Never try to override or tape down the door lock.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Bosch E16 / F16

  1. Close the door firmly

Open the door, then push it shut until you hear it click. Press Start/Pause to resume the program.

  2. Check for caught laundry

Look around the door seal for socks or sleeves trapped in the gap. Tuck them back into the drum, and if the drum is packed tight, take a few items out before closing the door again.

  3. Restart the program

Turn the washer off, turn it back on, pick your program and start it again.

When to call a technician

If the door closes properly with nothing in the way and the code still appears, the door lock or latch is probably faulty and should be replaced by a technician.
