Bosch Washer E:36 Error Code
Drain pump blocked. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
On newer Bosch models, E:36 indicates a drainage problem, most often a drain pump clogged with lint or small objects. The number after the code helps narrow it down.
Bosch lists E:36 with -25 or -26 as a blocked drain pump, and E:36/-10 as a general drain issue (same checks as E:30/-80). E:38 with -25 or -26 is also a blocked pump: Bosch says to clean the drum first, then the pump if the code returns. Listed on Bosch's US support site; Bosch models sold in the UK and Europe may use a different code, so check your manual.
How to fix Bosch E:36
Clean the drain pump
Turn the washer off and unplug it. If the floor around the outlet or cord is wet, switch off the washer's circuit breaker instead of touching the plug. Let hot water cool, then open the service flap, drain the leftover water into a shallow pan and unscrew the pump cover. Clear out lint and debris, check that the impeller spins, and screw the cover back in firmly.
Check the drain hose
With the washer still unplugged, make sure the drain hose is not kinked and is no more than 39 in (1 m) high at its highest point.
Clean the drum first (E:38)
If your display shows E:38, clean the drum as your manual describes (many models have a drum-clean program). If the code comes back afterward, clean the drain pump.
When to call a technician
If the pump and hose are clear and the code persists, have a technician check the drain pump and its wiring.

Frequently asked questions
What does E:36 mean on a Bosch washer?
On newer Bosch models, E:36 indicates a drainage problem, most often a drain pump clogged with lint or small objects. The number after the code helps narrow it down.
Can I fix Bosch E:36 myself?
Usually, yes. Most E:36 problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: clean the drain pump.
What if E:36 keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when E:36 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
