To reset an LG refrigerator, unplug it, wait about 5 minutes, and plug it back in; on a built-in model, LG says you can switch its breaker off for about 10 seconds instead. If the panel reads OF F, the fridge is in Display (demo) Mode and needs a button combination to switch it off. Write down any error code before you reset, because a code that returns afterward means a repair.
Read the display before you pull the plug
A lot of LG fridges that look broken are just sitting in a mode. Three readouts are worth spotting first. OF F (also written O F F or OFF) means Display Mode, the store setting that keeps the lights on with cooling switched off. Sb, which can look like S6, 5b or 56, means Sabbath mode, where alarms go quiet and the dispenser stops. A lock icon, or buttons that do nothing, usually means the panel is locked.
Anything else with letters or numbers is probably an error code. Snap a photo of it and look it up in the LG code list on this site before resetting. LG marks many codes, such as CO, iT and CH, as repair codes with no owner fix, and a power cycle won't change that.
Power-cycle the fridge for about 5 minutes
This is the reset LG gives on its US pages for a glitchy or flickering display and for the CO communication code. The owner's manual for LG's LPXS30866D French-door model sets the same floor: once the fridge is disconnected, wait at least five minutes before you plug it back in.
Dry your hands. LG says not to touch the plug, outlet or breaker with wet hands, and to keep the panel area dry.
Keep both doors shut so the cold stays in while the power is off.
Unplug the cord from the wall outlet. On a built-in or tightly fitted fridge where the plug is out of reach, switch off its breaker instead.
Wait about 5 minutes with the cord unplugged. For the breaker method on built-in models, LG's display guide gives about 10 seconds off before switching it back on.
Restore power and watch the panel. If the same code or fault is back, stop resetting and book service.
- Time: 5 to 10 minutes, no tools.
- Plug the fridge straight into a wall outlet. LG warns that household power strips have limited capacity and can trip the breaker, and the owner's manual rules out adapter plugs and multi-outlet extension cords.
- Expect it to run for a while afterward. LG's manual says a fridge can take up to 24 hours to cool completely once power is back.
- If the breaker trips the moment you plug the fridge in, leave it unplugged and contact LG.
Turn off Display Mode when the panel shows OF F
Display Mode shuts off cooling in both the fridge and the freezer, so food will warm up even though the lights and panel work. The way out is a button sequence. The button sequence depends on the age of the model, and LG tells you to read the first three digits of the serial number on the label inside the fridge: 901 or higher means a 2019 or newer model.
- 2018 and older: open the right-hand fridge door. Hold REFRIGERATOR and ICE PLUS together for about 5 seconds. You'll hear one beep as you press, then keep holding until a second beep.
- 2019 and newer: open either fridge door. Hold ICE PLUS and REFRIGERATOR until the second beep. Then keep your finger on REFRIGERATOR and tap ICE PLUS three times.
- No first beep: let go and start the sequence again.
- Success looks like a beep followed by the normal temperature settings on the panel.
Unlock the panel or end Sabbath mode
When the buttons ignore you but the fridge is cooling, try the lock first. LG's fix for an unresponsive panel is to press and hold Lock for 3 seconds. If you don't hear the chime, release it and try once more, then test the other buttons.
Sabbath mode is the other quiet culprit, since it silences alarms and switches off the dispenser. LG's code list says to hold Freezer and Wi-Fi together for 3 seconds to end it, and it also shuts itself off after 96 hours. If the panel still won't respond, LG suggests unplugging the fridge, checking the outlet with another device such as a phone charger, and requesting service if nothing changes.
Clear the filter indicator after a new cartridge
The indicator stays lit after the new cartridge is in until you hold the filter button. LG suggests a fresh filter about every 6 months, or sooner depending on how much water you use and its quality.
Install the new filter and flush it. LG gives two ways: run about 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters) through the dispenser, or dispense for 30 seconds, pause for 60 seconds, and repeat until you've dispensed for 5 minutes in total.
Find the filter button on the panel. LG's support page calls it Water Filter or Filter Reset, and some manuals call it Change Filter.
Press and hold it for 3 seconds, until you hear a chime or the indicator goes out.
Reset or test the ice maker
Before you reset anything, confirm the ice maker is switched on. Some LG ice makers have an ON/OFF switch on their left side. Others are controlled from the panel: if ICE ON isn't lit, hold Ice On/Ice Off for 3 to 5 seconds until it lights, then allow 24 hours for ice. A newly installed fridge can take 12 to 24 hours to make its first ice, and LG's manual says to throw out the first few batches (about 24 cubes).
LG's US reset for an ice maker that has stopped is short and needs no tools.
Pull out the ice bin.
Hold the ice maker and shake it up and down a couple of times, firmly but without forcing it.
Put the bin back, then cut power for 30 seconds at the plug or breaker.
Restore power and give it 4 to 6 hours. If no ice is made or dropped by then, LG says it needs repair.
- Test button, models with a switch and tray: remove the bucket, lay a towel underneath, and hold the button under the ice tray for about 3 seconds until the ice maker starts to turn. The tray takes about 4 to 5 oz (120 to 150 ml) of water, so expect a small spill.
- Trayless models: push a paper clip into the test hole and hold until the arms start to move. Keep the towel underneath on these too.
- On trayless models, the test runs only once in the first two hours after the fridge is plugged in. To repeat it sooner, unplug the fridge for about 30 seconds.
- Twist or flex tray models: the tray tilts about an hour after it fills. If it has stayed tilted for more than 1 hour, press and hold TEST/FILL on the ice maker itself (not the cubed ice button on the panel) until it cycles.
- Other tray styles: the tray tilts for about 5 minutes before the ice drops. If nothing drops and it stays tilted for over 30 minutes, reset the ice maker.
- If the motor didn't run or the tray never got water during the test, LG says the fridge most likely needs service.
Re-register the fridge on Wi-Fi
A Wi-Fi reset won't fix cooling or clear a code. It's for when the LG ThinQ app loses the fridge, you get a new router, or someone else needs to add it. LG Canada's guide for Wi-Fi models says to re-register by holding the Wi-Fi button for 3 seconds, which switches the connection off for a moment, then running the registration in the ThinQ app again.
The fridge only joins 2.4 GHz networks, and LG wants a network name made of English letters and numbers only, with no special characters. Turn off your phone's mobile data during setup so the app stays on your home Wi-Fi.
Codes that need more than a reset
LG ties a short power cut to only a few codes. For dH, a defrost failure, its code list says to unplug the fridge for 2 minutes; if the code returns, a repair is needed. CO gets the 5-minute power cycle described above, and LG says to call a technician if it comes back.
Fan codes FF and IF are different. LG's fix there is a long defrost: unplug the fridge, leave the doors open for at least 8 hours, then allow 24 to 48 hours after plugging it back in. Each code's page has the details. Codes like CH, 22, iT or IS go straight to service. One clean reset is fair; more than that hides the pattern a technician needs.
When to call a professional
Book LG service if an error code returns after one reset, if the panel stays dead with the lock off and the outlet working, or if the ice maker motor doesn't turn during its test. Give the agent the code, the model and serial number, and the steps you've already tried.
