About KitchenAid refrigerator error codes
KitchenAid is an American brand owned by Whirlpool Corporation. Its dishwashers and other appliances often use the same F-and-E code format as Whirlpool, for example F9E1, where the first part points to the system and the second to the specific fault.
How to read KitchenAid refrigerator codes
A KitchenAid French-door fridge with a fault usually flashes a single letter F on its display. KitchenAid's help site files each full code (F3E2, F6E1 and so on) on its own page, but those pages only give a reset. The meanings on this page come from a Whirlpool Corporation service tech sheet that uses the same code set.
Whirlpool's help site lists the same F codes and the same alerts for its French-door fridges, and the alert details we compared match. Before booking a visit, try KitchenAid's reset: power off at the plug or breaker for one minute, power back on, check cooling is on and watch for 60 seconds.
Messages like PO, Cooling Off, Door Alarm and the H2O light are alerts you clear yourself from the control panel. Keep a thermometer in each section while a fault is open: 37 to 40°F (3 to 4°C) in the fridge and about 0°F (-18°C) in the freezer.
Of the 11 codes on this page, 5 usually have a simple fix you can do yourself, and 6 usually need a technician. Each guide says which is which, so you don't pay for a service call you don't need, and you don't attempt a repair that isn't safe.

Frost in a freezer comes from humid room air getting in, most often through a door that isn't closing all the way or a gasket that no longer seals.

For a Samsung refrigerator, a reset means unplugging it or switching off its breaker, waiting about 5 minutes, then restoring power; for the 88 88 code or a frozen panel, Samsung lists 60 seconds.
Before you start
- Write down your model number. It's on a sticker, usually inside the door or lid, on the frame, or on the back or side panel. Parts and some code meanings depend on it.
- Try a reset. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker for 10 minutes. This clears many one-off glitches without tools.
- Check that the doors close fully and the vents inside aren't blocked by food. Give the fridge a few hours after any reset before judging the temperature.
