Samsung Dishwasher HC / HE Error Code

Heater or overheating error. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

HC / HE
May need a pro

The dishwasher has detected a heating problem: either the interior is too hot (HC) or the temperature is being read wrongly (HE). Very hot incoming water or a clogged filter can contribute, but the heater or sensor is often at fault.

US and Canadian guides split them: HC = overheating, HE = heater or temperature-reading error. UK and Australian guides treat HC and HE as one high-temperature heating code. UK models also show HC1 (often very hot inlet water or dirty filters) and HC2 / HC4 (drying-stage faults often linked to a blocked or covered door vent).

Safety first: unplug the dishwasher (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Samsung HC / HE

  1. Run an empty Normal cycle

Take the dishes out, add dishwasher detergent to the dispenser, and run a Normal cycle with the tub empty. Watch whether the code comes back during the cycle.

  2. Check the incoming water temperature

Samsung's US guide says hot water to the dishwasher should not go above 149°F (65°C). If your water heater is set very high, turn it down to a safe level.

  3. Power cycle the dishwasher

Switch the dishwasher off at its circuit breaker (or unplug it) and wait about 5 minutes. Restore power and start a fresh cycle. If the code clears and stays away, it was likely a one-time glitch.

When to call a technician

If the code returns, switch off the breaker and request service. Heater and sensor faults involve live electrical parts and need a technician.

Frequently asked questions

What does HC / HE mean on a Samsung dishwasher?

The dishwasher has detected a heating problem: either the interior is too hot (HC) or the temperature is being read wrongly (HE). Very hot incoming water or a clogged filter can contribute, but the heater or sensor is often at fault.

Can I fix Samsung HC / HE myself?

Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but HC / HE usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.

What if HC / HE keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when HC / HE appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
