Samsung Dryer hE Error Code

Heating error. What it means, which models show it, and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

hE
Moderate DIY

The dryer is having trouble controlling heat. Samsung says it most often means overheating caused by a clogged lint screen or vent, though it can also mean the dryer is not getting hot enough. On electric models low voltage or a tripped half of the breaker can stop heating; failed heating parts, a blown thermal fuse or a faulty sensor are other causes. A blocked vent that makes a dryer overheat is a fire risk, so clear it before using the dryer again.

Compatible models

Samsung doesn't publish a model list for this code; it appears on Samsung dryers with a digital display. Check your owner's manual.

Also shown as

Samsung groups HC, hE, HC4 and 1 HC together as heating errors. Parts guides also use HE and HE1 for the same heating fault. Gas and electric models have different heating parts. For HC2 on gas models, see its own entry.

Difficulty

Start with the safe checks below; a worn part may need replacing.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Samsung hE

  1. Clean the lint screen and vent

Clean the lint screen. Unplug the dryer (on a gas dryer, unplug it but leave the gas line alone), disconnect the exhaust hose and clear lint from it and from the dryer's outlet. Check the outside vent flap opens while the dryer runs.

  2. Check the breaker (electric dryers)

At the main panel, switch the dryer's double breaker fully off and back on. If only one half of a 240-volt breaker has tripped, the drum can turn but the heater gets no power.

  3. Gas dryers: check for a gas supply problem safely

If you smell gas at any point, leave the home and call your gas company from outside. Otherwise, if other gas appliances in the home have stopped working too, call the gas company. Do not open or adjust the gas valve or connector yourself.

  4. Restart

Leave the dryer off for a couple of minutes, then restore power and run a short heated cycle.

When to call a technician

If the code returns after the vent is clear and power is normal, book a repair. A technician will test the heating element or gas burner parts, the thermal fuse and the sensors; do not bypass a thermal fuse, because it is there to stop a fire.

Frequently asked questions

What does hE mean on a Samsung dryer?

On electric models low voltage or a tripped half of the breaker can stop heating; failed heating parts, a blown thermal fuse or a faulty sensor are other causes. Which Samsung models show the hE code?

Samsung doesn't publish a model list for this code; it appears on Samsung dryers with a digital display. Check your owner's manual.

Can I fix Samsung hE myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear hE, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.

What if hE keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when hE appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
