GE Dishwasher C3 / FTD / F56 Error Code
Dishwasher won't drain. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The dishwasher could not drain the tub. Food or paper in the sump, a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose, a blocked disposer or air gap, or heavy suds from the wrong detergent are the common causes.
Older models show C3; some newer models show FTD or F56 for a failure to drain. GE notes that not every code appears on every model; check your owner's manual.
How to fix GE C3 / FTD / F56
Clean the filters and sump
Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker. Remove the lower rack, take out the fine filters if your model has them, and rinse them. Clear paper, labels or food from the sump at the back of the tub floor. A cup or two of clean water left in the bottom is normal on many models.
Check the drain hose and sink drain
Under the sink, look for kinks or clogs in the drain hose. Run the garbage disposer before starting the dishwasher (never reach into the disposer), and if the disposer is new, make sure its knockout plug was removed. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into the dishwasher.
Clean the air gap
If your sink has an air gap (a small cap near the faucet), pull off the cover and clear out food or debris. If there is no air gap, the drain hose needs a high loop under the counter as shown in your installation instructions.
Reset the power
Switch off the dishwasher's circuit breaker (or unplug it) for about 30 seconds, then restore power and start a new cycle.
When to call a technician
If the drain path is clear, the right detergent is in use and the code returns after a reset, schedule service for the drain pump.
