GE Dishwasher C1 / C2 Error Code

Draining is taking too long. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

C1 / C2
Moderate DIY

The drain pump ran longer than expected: more than 2 minutes in one pump-out (C1) or more than 7 minutes in total (C2). A clogged air gap, a kinked drain hose or a blocked disposer is the usual cause.

GE notes that not every code appears on every model; check your owner's manual. On C2, pressing Reset stops the beeping.

Safety first: unplug the dishwasher (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE C1 / C2

  1. Clean the filters and sump

Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker. Remove the lower rack, take out the fine filters if your model has them, and rinse them. Clear paper, labels or food from the sump at the back of the tub floor. A cup or two of clean water left in the bottom is normal on many models.

  2. Check the drain hose and sink drain

Under the sink, look for kinks or clogs in the drain hose. Run the garbage disposer before starting the dishwasher (never reach into the disposer), and if the disposer is new, make sure its knockout plug was removed. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into the dishwasher.

  3. Clean the air gap

If your sink has an air gap (a small cap near the faucet), pull off the cover and clear out food or debris. If there is no air gap, the drain hose needs a high loop under the counter as shown in your installation instructions.

  4. Reset the power

Switch off the dishwasher's circuit breaker (or unplug it) for about 30 seconds, then restore power and start a new cycle.

When to call a technician

If the drain path is clear and the code keeps returning, the drain pump likely needs service.

Frequently asked questions

What does C1 / C2 mean on a GE dishwasher?

The drain pump ran longer than expected: more than 2 minutes in one pump-out (C1) or more than 7 minutes in total (C2). A clogged air gap, a kinked drain hose or a blocked disposer is the usual cause.

Can I fix GE C1 / C2 myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear C1 / C2, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.

What if C1 / C2 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when C1 / C2 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
