How it works
A DC motor run by the outdoor board turns the blade at variable speeds. If the board doesn't see the expected speed, it shuts down and sets a code.
Signs it is failing
- The outdoor fan doesn't spin while the compressor runs
- Blade hits ice, snow or debris
- High-pressure or overheating codes in summer
- Outdoor fan codes
Outdoor fan codes and some high-pressure and overheating codes come from this fan. LG says to check for debris or snow first.
Can you replace it yourself?
With the breaker and outdoor disconnect off, clear leaves and snow from around the unit, let any ice melt on its own instead of chipping at it, and check that the blade turns freely by hand. If it's seized, don't force it. The motor is wired into the outdoor high-voltage compartment, so replacement is tech work.
Buying the right part
Outdoor motors are model-specific DC units. The tech will order the right one.
