Worcester Bosch Boiler EA / EA 227 Error Code
Burner didn't light (no flame detected) on Worcester Bosch boilers.
Worcester BoschAll Worcester Bosch boiler codes
The boiler went through its lighting sequence and the flame sensor never picked up a flame, so it locked out. Worcester's user instructions name three things a homeowner can look at: no gas or low gas pressure, a condensate outlet blocked by ice or debris, or a blocked flue outlet. The CDi Classic engineer's booklet adds the internal suspects, such as air in the gas supply, the gas valve, the electrodes and ignition cable, a poor earth or the PCB.
Compatible models
Listed in the user instructions for Greenstar CDi Classic ErP combis (29, 34, 38 and 42) and the HighFlow 440CDi and 550CDi ErP, where it shows as EA. Greenstar i ErP (25i and 30i combi, 9i to 24i system) and Si Compact ErP manuals list EA with a cause number, and the GB162 V2 commercial boilers show EA227.
Also shown as
Greenstar CDi Classic and HighFlow CDi models show EA on its own. Greenstar i and Si Compact models show EA with a three-digit number underneath, and their manuals use EA and 227 as the example to quote. Worcester's GB162 V2 commercial boilers list EA227 as no burner ignition.
Difficulty
Start with the safe checks below; a worn part may need replacing.

How to fix Worcester Bosch EA / EA 227
Check that gas is reaching the house
Try lighting a gas hob or fire first. If none of them light, look at the meter: a prepayment meter may have run out of credit. If the other gas appliances work and the boiler still won't light, Worcester's manuals send you to your gas supplier for a supply or pressure problem.
Look for a frozen condensate pipe
In a cold snap, follow the plastic condensate pipe outside and feel for ice at bends, dips and the open end. Only deal with a section at ground level that you can reach without a ladder. Warm it with a hot water bottle, a microwave heat pack or a cloth soaked in hot water, or pour hot (not boiling) water over it, and watch for ice forming on paths afterwards.
Glance at the flue terminal
From the ground, check the flue outlet on the outside wall isn't covered by a bird's nest, ivy, a bag or a stack of garden furniture. Don't climb up to it.
Reset the way your model wants
On a Greenstar i or Si Compact, press reset once and the word Reset shows briefly. On CDi models, hold the button for 3 seconds, or 5 seconds after thawing a condensate pipe. Allow 2 to 3 minutes for the boiler to start again.
When to call a technician
Gas on, condensate pipe clear and EA 227 still back after a reset: book a Gas Safe registered engineer (RGII in Ireland) to look at the ignition and gas side. Smell gas at any stage and you leave the house and ring your gas emergency number from outside.
