Air Conditioner Wired remote and Wi-Fi adapter: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The wired wall controller, plus add-on adapters that plug into the indoor unit. Fujitsu's WLAN adapter lets you run the unit from a phone app over your home Wi-Fi, and its external input/output board lets outside equipment send the unit signals. Each one swaps data with the indoor board.

How it works

A wall controller connects to the indoor unit through a thin low-voltage cable; adapters connect to the indoor board. If the indoor unit stops hearing from one of them, it shows a controller or adapter communication code.

Signs it is failing

Controller and adapter communication codes point here or to the cable. Fujitsu lists loose terminals, a damaged cable and a failed controller; Daikin adds two main controllers wired to one unit and electrical noise.

Can you replace it yourself?

Reset power to the indoor unit and check that the wall controller sits firmly on its base. A new controller or adapter has to be wired to the indoor unit's terminals, which sit next to line-voltage connections on most units, so let the installer or a tech fit it.

Always unplug the air conditioner or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Buy the controller or adapter that the manufacturer lists as compatible with your indoor unit.
