Frigidaire Refrigerator H / HI Error Code

High temperature alarm. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

H / HI
Easy DIY fix

One of the compartments has been too warm for a while, usually more than an hour. On French-door and four-door models the alarm triggers when the freezer reaches 26°F (-3°C) or the refrigerator reaches 55°F (13°C). A door left open, a changed temperature setting, or a gasket that doesn't seal are the usual causes.

May show as H, HI, or High Temp. The temperature display blinks and an alarm sounds about every 60 seconds. When you first acknowledge it, the display shows the highest temperature reached.

Safety first: unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Frigidaire H / HI

  1. Close the doors and check the seals

Make sure every door and drawer is fully shut. Look for torn or folded gaskets and anything stopping a door from closing.

  2. Acknowledge the alarm

Press Clear Alerts or Alarm Reset if your model has it. The light may stay on until the compartment is back to a safe temperature.

  3. Check the settings

Frigidaire recommends about 37°F (3°C) for the refrigerator and 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer in a normal kitchen. Put the settings back if they were changed.

  4. Check your food

Throw out refrigerated perishables that were above 40°F (4°C) for more than 2 hours. Frozen food with ice crystals still in it can be refrozen.

When to call a technician

If the alarm comes back with the doors closed and normal settings, the refrigerator isn't cooling properly; contact your installer (first 30 days) or Frigidaire service.

Frequently asked questions

What does H / HI mean on a Frigidaire refrigerator?

One of the compartments has been too warm for a while, usually more than an hour. On French-door and four-door models the alarm triggers when the freezer reaches 26°F (-3°C) or the refrigerator reaches 55°F (13°C). A door left open, a changed temperature setting, or a gasket that doesn't seal are the usual causes.

Can I fix Frigidaire H / HI myself?

Usually, yes. Most H / HI problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: close the doors and check the seals.

What if H / HI keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when H / HI appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
