Fujitsu Air Conditioner 53 Error Code

Drain pump error. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

53
Moderate DIY

The float switch in the drain pan has stayed raised for several minutes because water isn't being pumped away. A clogged drain line or hose, a failed drain pump or a stuck float switch are the usual causes.

Lamp pattern: on models that show faults with the indicator lamps, Fujitsu's tables for RGLX compact ducted and RLF multi-zone units show this code as the Operation lamp flashing 5 times and the Timer lamp flashing 3 times, with the Economy lamp marked "continuous". Other Fujitsu units, such as universal-mount and ceiling-suspended models, use different lamps. A wired controller shows the code as a number. Only on units with a built-in drain pump and float switch; in Fujitsu's guide it appears for RGLX ducted and RLF multi-zone units, not standard wall units. On the older code set a float switch fault used 09. Fujitsu's older code set (for example older 9CQ/9RLQ/12CQ wall units, RMLQ-series multi-zone heads and some RCLX ceiling cassettes) uses different numbers for many faults, so always check the manual for your model.

Safety first: unplug the air conditioner (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Fujitsu 53

  1. Check the condensate drain line

With the breaker off, follow the drain hose from the indoor unit to where it ends outside or at a drain. Straighten any kinks, make sure the end isn't buried in soil, ice or a puddle, and clear dirt or algae from the open end. If the hose runs uphill anywhere, water can back up into the unit.

  2. Clear the outlet end

If the drain line ends outdoors, hold a wet/dry vacuum over the open end for a minute or two to pull out sludge. Don't push anything up the pipe.

  3. Reset the power at the breaker

Switch the system off with the remote, then turn off its circuit breaker in your home's main panel. Wait about 5 minutes, switch the breaker back on and restart the unit. If the code returns within a few minutes, write it down for the technician.

When to call a technician

If water is dripping from the unit or the code returns, switch it off and call an HVAC technician to check the pump and float switch.

Frequently asked questions

What does 53 mean on a Fujitsu air conditioner?

The float switch in the drain pan has stayed raised for several minutes because water isn't being pumped away. A clogged drain line or hose, a failed drain pump or a stuck float switch are the usual causes.

Can I fix Fujitsu 53 myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear 53, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.

What if 53 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when 53 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
