Whirlpool Washer F9E1 Error Code
Long drain time. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The washer is taking too long to pump the water out, typically more than about 8 minutes. A kinked or clogged drain hose, a clogged pump filter on front-loaders, or heavy suds are the usual culprits. A failing drain pump can also cause it.
Front-load and top-load models; also written F9 E1. Some top-load displays show drn or dr instead, and some older front-loaders use F21 for a drain problem.
How to fix Whirlpool F9E1
Straighten the drain hose
Pull the washer out carefully and check the drain hose for kinks, crushed spots, or a hose pinched against the wall. Check that the household drain or laundry sink isn't backed up.
Check the drain hose setup
The hose should go no more than about 4.5 inches into the standpipe, use its U-shaped form, and not be taped airtight. The drain point should be no higher than 96 inches above the bottom of the washer.
Clean the drain pump filter (front-loaders)
Unplug the washer and lay towels and a shallow pan in front of it. Open the filter access behind the lower front panel or drawer as your manual describes, drain the water slowly, and remove lint, coins, or small items. Let the water cool first if a hot cycle just ran.
Cut down on suds
Use only HE detergent in the recommended amount, since extra suds slow draining. On front-loaders, also wipe out the small drain holes in the door seal.
When to call a technician
If the hose and filter are clear and the washer still drains slowly or not at all, the drain pump has likely failed and a technician should test and replace it.
