Whirlpool Refrigerator PO Error Code

Power outage warning. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

PO
Easy DIY fix

The refrigerator lost power long enough for the freezer to warm to 18°F (-8°C) or higher. It sounds three alert tones and shows PO so you know to check your food. It is a warning, not a fault.

On some older models the freezer display shows 18°F (-8°C) instead of PO after a power failure, and you clear it by pressing a freezer temperature key once the freezer is cold again.

Safety first: unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool PO

  1. Acknowledge the alert

Press the button below the blinking Confirm label (Measured Fill on many models). The PO message clears and the display returns to normal.

  2. Check your food

Throw out refrigerated perishables such as meat, dairy, and leftovers that sat above 40°F (4°C) for more than 2 hours. Frozen food that still has ice crystals or stayed at 40°F (4°C) or colder can be refrozen.

  3. Check the power supply

If you didn't have a household outage, make sure the plug is fully seated and the breaker hasn't tripped. Don't use an extension cord.

When to call a technician

If PO keeps appearing when the house hasn't lost power, the refrigerator may be losing power internally; have the outlet and refrigerator checked.

Usually, yes. Most PO problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: acknowledge the alert.

What if PO keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when PO appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
