Refrigerator Ice room fan motor: What It Does and Signs It's Failing
On many French-door models that make ice up in the fresh food section, a small fan sends freezer air through a duct to the ice compartment. That cold air is what lets the ice maker freeze cubes in the warmer part of the fridge.

How it works
The fan runs when the ice maker needs cooling, and the board checks its speed signal. If frost blocks the blade or the motor quits, the board throws a code.
Signs it is failing
- Ice production slows down or stops
- Soft, clumped or melted ice in the bin
- Frost around the ice compartment or its door
- An ice room or ice maker fan code
Ice fan codes are often caused by frost from a door that isn't sealing or a fridge that isn't level. Fix the seal problem first or the code will return.
Can you replace it yourself?
Check that the doors close evenly, the fridge is level and the ice compartment door seals. LG's fix for its ice maker fan code is a full manual defrost: unplug the fridge, move the food out and leave the doors open for at least 8 hours. The fan sits in the ice compartment or its duct, so replacement is usually a service call.
Buying the right part
The fan is specific to that ice compartment design, so get the OEM part listed for your model.
