Dryer Drum belt: What It Does and Signs It's Failing
The drum belt is a long, thin ribbed belt that wraps around the drum and the motor pulley. An idler pulley keeps it tight. It's the only thing that turns the drum.

How it works
The motor pulley grabs the ribbed side of the belt and the belt turns the drum. Over time it stretches, cracks or snaps, and the idler wheel wears and squeals. With a broken belt, the motor runs but the drum sits still.
Signs it is failing
- Motor runs but the drum doesn't turn
- Drum spins freely by hand with no drag
- Squealing, thumping or rumbling as the drum turns
- Drum or motor code on some electronic models
Drum-not-turning and some motor codes come from a broken belt rather than the motor.
Can you replace it yourself?
Unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand: if it spins with no drag at all, the belt is off or broken. Replacing it means taking off the front panel or top and lifting the drum, about 30 to 60 minutes. Route it around the idler and motor pulley as the diagram that comes with the belt shows, ribbed side against the drum.
Buying the right part
Belts differ in length and width, so order by model number. On an older dryer, a kit with belt, idler and drum rollers is usually worth it.
