Room temperature probe open or shorted on Friedrich air conditioners.

E5 / E6
May need a pro

The indoor probe reads the room air coming into the unit. E5 is an open circuit and E6 is a short. When either happens, the control assumes the room is 90°F (32°C) and keeps running, so the unit may cool nonstop and ignore your setpoint.

Compatible models

Covered by Friedrich's RAC service manual for its 2008-2009 room units, which spans the QuietMaster, XStar, Premium and TwinTemp lines.

Also shown as

These come from Friedrich's room air conditioner service manual, which lists no codes beyond E6.

Difficulty

Try the basic checks, but the usual fix is a technician's job.

Safety first: unplug the air conditioner (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Friedrich E5 / E6

  1. Notice nonstop cooling

If the unit runs constantly no matter what temperature you set, that matches this fault. Turn it off by hand when the room gets cold enough.

  2. Restart once

Pull the plug for a few minutes and plug it back in. If the unit still won't cycle off at your setpoint, stop there.

When to call a technician

A technician needs to test the indoor probe's resistance and replace it. Left in place, a bad probe can let the unit ice up.
