Refrigerator Evaporator fan motor: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The fan behind the back panel of the freezer (and in the fresh food section on dual-evaporator models) that blows air across the cold evaporator coil and pushes it into the compartments. Without it the coil stays frozen and the cabinet warms up.

How it works

It runs while the compressor runs to move cold air through the cabinet. Many electronic models watch its speed signal and set a fan code if the blade stops or slows.

Signs it is failing

Freezer fan and fresh food fan codes usually mean frost has locked the blade, often from a door left open or a bad gasket. If there's no frost, the motor itself is the next suspect.

Can you replace it yourself?

Unplug the fridge, move the food to a cooler and leave the doors open to melt any ice around the fan; LG says at least 8 hours, and Samsung suggests a few hours for its fridge fan code. If the code comes back with no frost, the motor can be changed by removing the freezer back panel. Don't chip ice with a knife; you can puncture the coil.

Always unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Fan motors are model-specific, and some fridges have two or three. Check whether you need the freezer or fresh food fan before ordering by full model number.
