How it works
On electronic models a small motor moves the flap based on the fresh food sensor reading. Older models use a mechanical control with a sensing tube to do the same job.
Signs it is failing
- Freezer fine but fresh food section warm
- Fresh food section too cold, freezing lettuce
- Frost around the damper opening
- A damper or air door code
Air door and damper codes, plus 'freezer cold, fridge warm' complaints, can point here. Whirlpool even has codes for a damper whose duct is blocked. Check the evaporator fan and defrost first.
Can you replace it yourself?
With the power cord out, look for frost or food blocking the damper or its vent. The assembly is behind a panel in the fresh food ceiling or back wall and usually comes out with a few screws.
Buying the right part
Dampers are model-specific, so order by full model number and keep the foam seal around the housing intact when you fit it.
